Inuit Inukshuk Sculpture

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

#inuit #canada #arctic - One of the icons of the Arctic in Canada of course is the Inuit Inukshuk. Here is a nice inukshuk sculpture. It was also interesting to see that the inukshuk was also the inspiration for the logo and mascot for the Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Dancing Polar Bear Inuit Carvings

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

#inuit #art — I love dancing polar bear Inuit carvings since they have that fun attitude. They are also not the easiest subject to carve especially to get them balancing on one leg. That is why dancing bears are usually carved (successfully) by only experienced Inuit carvers and the prices for these polar bear carvings are at a premium.

Here’s a nice example of a dancing polar bear Inuit carving. What do you think of it?

Northwest Indian Art Print Of Loon

Friday, July 30th, 2010

#art #nativeamerican #aboriginal - This is a wonderful limited edition Northwest Indian art print of a loon by Chief Lloyd Joseph who happens to be a real life chief (of Squamish Nation). It is a very rare print since only 18 were ever produced.

I managed to acquire three of them. One was sold to a customer in the USA while another print was shipped to a customer in Australia. Despite market demand, I kept the third copy for myself and it now hangs in my home office.

What do you think about this Northwest Indian art print?

Inuit Art Polar Bear With Fish Sculpture

Friday, July 30th, 2010

#art #inuit #arctic — Here is an example of a high end Inuit art polar bear sculpture. The carver added an additional part to the polar bear which turned out to be an Arctic fish to be carried in the bear’s mouth.

The way the Inuit carver accomplishes this is a hole is drilled inside the polar bear’s mouth. Then a small piece of wood, much like a dowel, is used to connect the fish with the bear.

I recall that this particular Inuit art polar bear sculpture was sold to a lucky owner in the UK. How do you like this polar bear?
