Native Aboriginal Art At Toronto Museum

Native Aboriginal Art

I visited a Toronto museum this weekend and got some video footage of a few pieces of Native Aboriginal art they had on display. They didn’t have very much compared to the Museum of Civilization in Gatineau but the ones they had were quite nice.

The collection included several Iroquois carvings, an Inuit whalebone carving from Labrador Arctic, a nice Morriseau Woodlands painting (pictured above), some Southwest Kachina dolls and a small assortment of Haida artifacts including old boxes and masks.

The Iroquois art carvings were quite impressive especially given that we don’t see many around on display at museums.

Here is the video that shows some of this collection.

    Hi,
I am looking for my Fathers art work. He has large Canoes (high sea and river canoes) His name is Jack Johnson(DoB, March 15,1900-1971). I know of two Totem Poles in one in Victoria Museum, and Stanley Park Museum, Plus he has Masks and other Artifacts at museums that I need to make a connection to. I am looking for old Artifacts from Owikeno Village. Thank you.

Hello, Clint — I`d really like to look at (or own for free!) those two books on Inuit and Native art, but it seems I can`t because I`m already registered with you. I`ve never downloaded any books for free from you before! I hope I can get these! I`m doing a stamp and postcard exhibition earliestf northern peoples, from their first arrival to modern day, and what we, the white people, have done to their beautiful cultures, lands, spirituality and before us, pretty good health! It distresses me greatly and I`m hoping my little show will raise some more awareness of it. Cheers — Kannik

Museum of Civilization in Gatineau has a huge collection. McCord Museum in Montreal has a small collection too.
